Relaxation

This is a popular, adults only, Thomson Gold hotel with a 3* rating a little way out of the main resort of Santa Eulalia. We were disappointed with the regular side sea view room which was very tired and had no outlook. The safe cost several euros per day, the shower was over the bath, there was a small fridge/minibar and tea/coffee making facilities. We upgraded to a Deluxe room for 17 euros a day which had a free safe and a large walk in shower – much easier for disabled access. Both rooms had excellent mattresses (and we do need them!), lots of English channels on the TVs (wall-mounted flat screens in the Deluxe rooms) and Sky Sports in the main lounge.

We noticed several guests in wheelchairs and there were ramps around the hotel so we were quite impressed with the facilities for disabled although we didn’t speak to anyone to gain their impressions.

The food was quite disappointing: erratic in quality from night to night – but the breakfasts were reasonable. The dining room is so bland it feels more like a cafeteria and this underlined for us why the hotel is only 3*.

It’s a good ten minute walk to the town along the seafront (longer if you have a disability) or to the supermarket along the main road so the hotel could do with a small shop to save so many elderly guests having to carry bottled water such a distance, especially in the heat.

The pool is small but adequate and warm. However, one of the biggest failings of this hotel is the lack of sunbeds. Get up at the crack of dawn for a decent bed by the pool or end up with an inferior bed – in comfort and quality – either on the other side of the public footpath running alongside or at the front of the hotel on an unattractive area of artificial grass with no facilities. We felt the pool area had far too many tables and chairs and far too few sunbeds and this was something we found many other guests agreed with. There is no beach, just a rocky cove.

Evening entertainment was the usual Thomson Gold standard (not our cup of tea but some seem to like it) though there were very few people watching it on most evenings that we were there.

All this notwithstanding, this is a very popular hotel and the little town is very attractive and even has non-smoking beaches. A morning walk with the local rep is well worth going on to discover a little local history and to give you your bearings. I enjoyed a walk into the town most days and it certainly has more character and charm than its neighbouring towns.

We wouldn’t go back – we prefer a proper beach and a little more luxury. However, Santa Eulalia is certainly very pleasant and we would choose to be in a hotel closer to the town and the beaches.
