Reasons for trip

The best priced and best food this visit. This hotel restaurant at the edge of the Centro Commercial district of Molins de Rei looks nothing from the outside but the restaurant when we visited on Monday – tucked away at the rear – looked good and was clearly very popular (and our experience showed why). Mealtimes (ex-breakfast) are 1300-1600 and 2100-2300.

The ‘menu weekend’ at Euro14.90 continues on to Mondays (when almost all shops and some street cafés are shut) – was very reasonable and the food was very good and also substantial. For starter I had the ‘Ous cabrejats/Huevos cabreados – no English-language translation on this menu (but yes on the main menu where it was ‘eggs pissed’ LOL) .. was very tasty sort-of roast potato with two fried eggs on top; Margaret had the Melo amb pernil/Melon con jambon – you got it; melon with ham, done like a kebab on sticks. We both enjoyed our choices. We shared a ‘only for 2 persons’ Paella marinera and were happy to pay the Euro 6.90 pp supplement to try this … and it did work. Very nice. For desert M had ice cream and I had the Crema Catalana which, as it sounds, is the local version of the French Crème Caramel – and it was good.

The house Red was a 2014 Nuviana Tempra Cabernet Sauv’ that was nice and smooth and, at 8 Euro (yes – 8 Euro in a restaurant for the bottle!) ‘nuff said!! The Agua sin gas was 2.50.

Made another ‘late-lunchtime’ visit the following Friday, when the ‘Menu Chef’ (not available in the night sitting) at 11E50 was even more reasonably priced. For starters M had the same as before; I had the ‘Salmorejo’ – a (served cold) tomato-based soup with diced serrano ham and hard boiled egg whites; for mains we again paid a 6E90 supplement – for me that was for the leg of lamb; and for M it was the entrecote. Both were sizeable servings (something we noted on our earlier visit). Desert was panna cota for me, and fresh fruit salad for M.

The main menu had lots to choose from but, as the evening meal times were 2100-2300 (these Spaniards!) we were not likely to go the whole hog … on the al a carte menu prices ranged from: tapas (including my pi**ed eggs!) 3.90-14.90; Arrossos (Paelas) all at 12.90pp except for the lobster at 19.90pp (paellas min’ 2 persons); Hamburgues ‘solo noches’ (only on the night menu?) 7.90 regular, or 8.50 for the ‘gin-tonic’ version of the same burger; Meats 12.90-39.90. Sorry – missed the desert menu.
