Reasons for trip

Having some Dutch friends to stay I wanted to take them somewhere different. (I live in Greenwich and we have exhausted all the local sights in the past). One of my friends has mobility problems and we were delighted to discover that blue badge holders can take their car right into the Museum grounds. (A real bonus as parking in the Forest Hill area is almost impossible). However it is easy to access the Museum by public transport and this was how I had been there previously.

We set off round the dreaded South Circular road and it took us about 40 minutes to get there. I have not been to the Horniman’s Museum since my son was little (he is now 48!) so it has changed considerably. It is now a wonderful little oasis in the heart of South London. The Museum itself houses numerous exhibitions (most things are free but they do sometimes have temporary exhibitions which have to be paid for). The permanent exhibitions include The World Gallery, The Music Gallery, a marvellous Natural History Gallery and the Balcony Gallery which had some fascinating photographs on display.

There is a lovely little cafe with outside seating and the grounds are extensive. We saw lots of mums with young children enjoying picnics. There is so much for little children to see, the petting zoo, a butterfly house (a small fee is charged for this) and lots of interactive things like the music garden where we indulged in playing a tune on some of the equipment provided!

We spent a lovely day there so I would hugely recommend it as a place to take visitors, friends, family or grand children.
