This restaurant is a mainstay in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan – somewhere I have been for meals for 35 years. It is a family-owned business situated in an old house just off Main Street. You can eat in the bar to the left or go into the dining room on the right or upstairs (two further levels). In nice weather, the patio is another option. The house is full of Victorian furniture and memorabilia. The second floor has a gift shop. Hopkins is the only place I have ever been asked for identification to drink alcohol – the day I turned 19 years old (the drinking age here). Yes, it was a long time ago!
I have been back many times since then for lunches and dinners on special occasions and not, and on a house tour during which we were lead around by the owner. Recently I was at Hopkins for lunch with a friend and the food was dependably good.
Our waiter was the only one working both sides of downstairs so he was run off his feet but the only time we couldn’t find him was when we wanted to pay. The kitchen missed my avocado on my BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) sandwich and cauliflower soup ($8.00). Our waiter offered to bring me a new sandwich but I opted for some avocado on the side instead. My friend really enjoyed her prime rib sandwich and soup with horseradish on the side ($9.00). The beef was cooked perfectly.
It is open seven days a week but is closed for lunch on Mondays.
