Holker Hall, the home of Lord and Lady Cavendish is situated only a short distance from Grange-over-Sands and the expanse of Morecambe Bay, Holker Hall is set in exceptionally beautiful countryside with gardens that merge into Parkland framed by the Lakeland Hills. It is only about 30 minutes from Windermere.
Holker is very much a family home there are no annoying ropes to stop you getting close to the furniture and works of art on display. The rule is simply look but don't touch. The Victorian wing of the house is open to visitors built in the 1870's. There is a lovely restaurant/Tea room and a small gift shop.
Part of the gardens are currently being redesigned but there was plenty to see.
We spent about 4 hours at Holker. There were the usual bus parties first thing so we wandered in the gardens until they had finished viewing the house and then had the house virtually to ourselves. There are very knowledgeable guides on hand to recount stories of the house and the family.
This was a marvellous day out.
