We were on a cruise with P&O, we sat chatting the night before and decided that as we had not booked anything for the next day perhaps we should get off our ship and head to Herculaneum, it was the easiest thing ever, we went through the terminal and looked for the taxi’s standing along the road outside we asked the drive how much (look for the cars with the numbers on the front doors they are official) he agreed to come back at a certain time to return us to the ship and would not take payment insisting that we only pay on return, he was our own private tour guide on the way pointing out interesting houses and buildings along the way.
Herculaneum is so special, try to get there early (as we did) it was very empty, because of this we got the quite and eerie sense of the place, (take water as it gets quite hot and dry). It is as it was … what remains of a once vibrant and busy place full of life, walking through and seeing what they have found brings home to you how quickly the rocks and mud took away everything leaving no trace.
We got back safe and sound to our ship and would not hesitate to visit again, we did check out the cost of booking this trip through the cruise ship and saved by doing it ourselves.
