Reasons for trip

“Henry’s Cafe Bar”:https://www.henryscafebar.co.uk/piccadilly is located opposite Green Park tube station. Whilst we’ve had drinks there several times, we’d never had food. But it seemed an ideal halfway house for lunch with a friend living on the opposite end of the Victoria Line to us.

We were greeted by a very jolly manager who quickly showed us to a table for three in the window at the front: the bar is deep and narrow and can seem rather dark as you venture further inwards. There are a few pavement tables outside, but we thought they would be noisy due to the location on the busy Piccadilly.

The “wine list”:https://www.spccs1.co.uk/menus/City%20Bars%20August%20Drink%20Web%20Menu.pdf wasn’t ordered by price and well down the list, we found a very reasonably priced South African Nederburg Chenin Blanc for £19.95. Although we were presented with the “main menu”:https://www.spccs1.co.uk/menus/USJ210077%20-%20CITY%20BARS%20-%20CORE%20FOOD.pdf, a Google search beforehand told me there was also a “lunch menu”:https://www.spccs1.co.uk/menus/City%20Bars%20FY21%20-%20Lunch%20A5%20Web%20Menu.pdf available from Monday to Friday until 4pm. This had a list of very appealing sandwiches with some having a symbol next to them denoting that a soft drink was included. For £1.50 this could be upgraded to a 175ml glass of wine which was exceptional value bearing in mind the sandwiches were priced around £8. There was a salad garnish and a choice of white or malted bloomer bread and either fat chips or skinny fries.

We all chose something different: ham and cheddar toastie; chicken, bacon and avocado; and Wiltshire cured ham. All were fresh and delicious and didn’t distract from the main business of chatting (which is why I forgot to take photographs).

Table service was excellent. The waiter, who looked around 12, deserves a medal for the way he delivered a tray containing a bottle of wine in a chiller, bottle of water, three large wine glasses and three tumblers with ice and lemon.

This is a casual place and unlike a restaurant, they didn’t mind us lingering and chatting after we had eaten.

If your ever near Green Park, it’s a place to bear in mind for brunch, lunch, dinner or just a coffee or drink as they’re open from 10am to 11pm.
