Reasons for trip

Headlam Hall Hotel is one of those Hotels.

One of those Hotels that oozes class without being out of your reach.

Headlam Hall, in the village of Headlam has a bit of history. It stands on the eastern edge of the Durham Dales and it’s miles from anywhere.

We went there for Sunday Lunch last week with the family in the latest episode of Management’s 70th birthday celebrations.

We haven’t finished those celebrations yet. We’re off to Devon next week, Blackpool the week after that, and down to Norfolk a couple of weeks after that.

In the 16th Century the Headlam Estate belonged to the Birkbeck family from Cumberland.

The second son of Thomas Birkbeck, Henry of Headlam, inherited the Estate, and as a gift to his wife Anne, he commissioned an elaborate Oak fireplace with the family coat of arms displayed in the centre of the mantle. This fireplace still stands in pride of place today and is much admired by hotel guests as they relax in front of the real flame fire.

By the mid 18th Century the property came into the possession of Laurence Brockett as a result of his marriage to Anne, the great, great grand daughter of Henry and Anne Birkbeck.

In 1912 the property was acquired by Lord and Lady Gainford (J.A. Pease M.P. for Darlington) where they lived until their deaths in the 1940’s. The Hall then belonged to the Stobart Family until 1977 when it was acquired by the present owners, the Robinson Family, who set about developing the House into a great eating place and ultimately a charming Hotel, Spa and Golf complex.

Our celebration Lunch in a private room was just lovely. The award winning kitchen produces modern British Food which reflects the fabulous local and seasonal produce.

Our Sunday Lunch was tasty, well presented in generous proportions and the cost, in these superb surroundings was very reasonable.

Altogether it was a happy and successful family occasion which was enjoyed by all.
