“Hall’s Croft,”:http://wasleys.org.uk/eleanor/stately_homes_castles/england/westmidlands/hallscroft/index.html the home of Shakespeare’s daughter Susanna and her husband Dr Hall is the only Shakespeare town property with a cafe. It is in the C19th extension at the back of the house with a pleasant seating area with a mix of comfy chairs or tables and chairs, or you can sit in the garden. There is a small service counter displaying a range of home made cakes as well as a specials board with light lunches.

The Victoria sponge cake was made with wholemeal flour and had a thick cream filling. The gluten free orange, lemon and lime cake had a crumbly texture with a layer of water icing. Both looked good. There were also big round shortbread biscuits. chocolate brownies or yogurt topped apple and blackcurrant flapjack which looked interesting. In the end I played safe with a fruit scone which was still warm from the oven.

I decided to sit in the garden and my scone with a glass of water was brought out to me. On a warm summer’s day with the birds singing, this is a lovely place to sit with views of the house and attractive gardens.

The scone had plenty of fruit and wasn’t too sweet. It was crisp on the outside and crumbly inside. It came with a generous two pats of butter. I enjoyed it.
