A fascinating afternoon tour of Matera. Luigi is a very knowledgeable guide and really brought the history of Matera and the Sassi to life. His explanation of the Neolithic villages on the plateau to the early cave dwellings in the Sassi and the more recent history of clearance and re-settlement of the Sassi between 1952 and 1990 and restoration of the Cathedral was very interesting. Our 3 hours just flew by. Be prepared for lots of steps and uneven paths. We booked this the day before by email.
If we visit Matera again we would definitely stay for at least one night, we feel we just touched the surface of this Unesco World Heritage site. Matera is the European City of Culture in 2019 so it may attract even more visitors.
