Reasons for trip

Having purchased our National trust passes for the year, and the weather being so glorious, we decided to visit Greenway, which is within easy travelling distance of where we live.

I rang up to reserve a car place because space is at a premium there, and within an hour we had arrived.

The setting is stunning. It’s located on the River Dart in Devon, with wooded farmland and green pastures and gently rolling hills.

The walk down to the house from the car park was downhill, and once there, we were given information about the estate, which was very helpful.

The house was of great interest. Each room was packed with interesting artefacts ranging from silverware, pottery, collections from abroad, wonderful paintings, photographs and much more. I must say, every time I had the chance to wallow in the view I did! It was fantastic. Agatha Christie’s bedroom had stunning views through the mature trees right down to the river below.

We spent a good hour in the house, musing through old cookery books and favourite recipes used for entertaining, also admiring the wonderful dresses owned by Agatha in her theatre visiting days. I was also surprised at how many books she had written!
My favourite part of the day was to come! We walked down to the old boathouse on the river side. It was a steep climb down, and not suitable for disabled people. The route went through wooded natural gardens including camellias and tree ferns. As we reached the river I was stunned at its beauty. Small boats were moored up, and we sat watching boats gently sail by. We could have stayed for ever there. Such was the peace and quiet.

We will certainly return, next time with a picnic, and enjoy the glorious slice of England where we live!
