We stayed here for a week in September during extremely hot weather. The hotel is 5 star, but the outside needs repainted. The foyer and public rooms are indeed grand, and the views across the bay spectacular. We had ordered a car to pick us up from the airport, but the car did not turn up. Eventually we got a taxi. The receptionists response was "we won't charge you for the car"! On 4 occasions we asked for an iron. Each iron they brought was in such a bad state of repair they could not be used. In fact the last iron fused everything in our room, including the air con. To be fair, when we complained to the assistant manager he personally delivered a working iron to our room and a complimentary bottle of wine.
The worst thing about this hotel was the location. When you want to walk into town you have 91 steps to climb from the hotel entrance, then you continue up a hill to the town. These steps nearly killed me! The combination of extreme heat and the climb was awful. The hotel provide one free ride up the hill at 10am and one at 6pm. Otherwise you pay 12 euros per trip! There was a disabled couple who we heard complaining to management several times. Basically they were stuck in the hotel unless they paid for a taxi.
Breakfast was disappointing. Cold tea and cold scrambed eggs were the norm. They had all the usual stuff, but the bacon was so overcooked it was like eating razor blades.
We've booked to go to Malta again in the spring, but this time we're going to a 4 star hotel in a better location. This one was highly recommended by a friend.
