My sister and I were recommended to try the Aminta in Sorrento. It's up on a hill overlooking the town, but you can walk down a path (avoiding the many motorbikes also using it!) to the town centre in 15 minutes (or back up, taking about 30!), or use the regular free shuttle bus. We had a comfortable room, overlooking the town and the bay: for a bit extra we could have had a balcony. Some rooms, we learned, had tea and coffee making facilities but ours did not – a bit of a snag as the bar prices weren't cheap. The pool was very pleasant – don't be taken in by the offer to reserve a sunbed for €4 a day, it was not necessary – and the food in the restaurant pretty good, though maybe not quite as good as I'd hoped in a hotel claiming to be four star. Breakfast offered rather watery fruit juice, tinned peaches or pears, fresh melon, cold meats and cheese, rather fatty bacon, sausage, scrambled egg and tomatoes (the same every day) and not particularly fresh rolls or bread for toasting. Twice a week there was a special four course meal (but without a choice), the rest of the time it was three courses with a good choice if rather heavy on the pasta dishes. We found the soups particularly good. Overall a pleasant place to stay, and very well situated, but perhaps a little pricey (our package, including flights and 20kg luggage was £1200 each).
