Reasons for trip

We discovered this NT property by accident. We had stayed at the Holiday Inn on Tadcaster Road in York, to child mind our grandchildren (aged 6 and 9) while their parents went to an evening event in York. We needed something to do for a few hours before returning to our prospective homes, and this place was near to the hotel.

It was the home of the Terry (chocolate) family. Only selected rooms were open, as it is also a NT regional office. Small, but a real effort had been made to make it informative and interesting. The staff were very friendly and informative. It was very child friendly, with hands on experiences –type writer, pin ball game, garden games. My grandchildren loved this, and they explored the garden on their own – it was small enough not to get lost in, but had interesting paths, ponds and plants. The 1930s style tea room overlooked the garden, so we had a civilised coffee break while keeping an eye on the youngsters. The wicker chairs on the patio were comfy to sit on and chat, while the children roamed.

Small and intimate, a grand place to relax in and catch up with family or friends, without being overloaded with too much grandeur or space.
