Reasons for trip

Although I’ve attended talks and afternoon tea at the Glen yr Afon Hotel over a number of years this was the first time I’d dined there.

I was joined by my husband, his businesses partner and her husband. My husband is vegetarian and we all enjoy fine dining.

We were warmly welcomed and offered drinks before being shown to our table in the beautifully decorated small dining room.

One small niggle was that we’d been asked to make our choice from the “Christmas Menu” a few days in advance. If it’s a “Christmas Menu” then surely they would cater for all the options provided on that menu.

One person chose the Soup of the Day which he enjoyed, but couldn’t identify exactly what it was. He asked the waiter who had to go to check with chef – it was “Winter Vegetable”.

The food was delicious with excellent portions – we did wonder when they were going to stop bringing out more vegetables!

One of the party ordered a glass of white wine – it was warm. The waitress apologised and brought a fresh glass saying “I’ve opened a new bottle for you”. That was less warm but certainly not as chilled as one would like but at least the taste was good.

The staff were friendly and cheerful, engaging in conversation although several times they apologised for the fact that they were busy. Apart from just eight of us in the small dining room it seems there was a party of 150 people attending a company Christmas dinner. One thing to mention is the fact that we could not hear the disco which was in the in the main function room next door – full marks for noise insulation.

I would certainly be happy to eat here again – will try lunch next time.
