I travelled with my 20-year-old son for an early year bargain trip to Gdansk and is far and away exceeded my expectations. The waterfront and large old town is very striking, as is the food which was marvellous – we fine dined a few times for only about a fiver a head.
If you are interested in history (I am) then Gdansk is packed with fascinating stories. The second world war’s first land battle happened here and you can visit the post office where it took place and the solemn wall where the Polish defenders were executed afterwards.
I fitted in a 5k parkrun on the Saturday morning and the vibe there was just the same as any in the UK. Took place in the Ronald Reagan park, complete with his statue next to the pope, both key figures in this city’s history.
Gdansk is also actually one of three towns on this part of the northern coast as we visited Sopot too, just half hour text ride and is a very chic seaside resort – another surprise!
