Culture/Sightseeing

Every time we drove in and out of Galle Fort, we passed a roadside fish market, so with half a day to spare, we decided to take a closer look. Although we’d anticipated having to walk along the busy road, we discovered a newly renovated pedestrian walkway hugging the coastline, which started near the fort gate. Whilst it eventually petered out into the original bumpy path, it kept us away from the traffic noise and fumes.

Along the path were concrete seats and we stopped to take in the views of the bay and take advantage of the shade as it was around 30 degrees. We met the odd drunk, a spaced-out chap asleep on the pavement and others claiming to be chefs from the various hotels, who were desperate to engage us in conversation and no doubt try to sell us a sightseeing trip.

Nearing the market, we spotted a fishing boat coming into shore. We quickened our pace and got there just as it landed on the beach, where it was met by a large waiting crowd of other fishermen, locals wanting to buy fish fresh from the boat and the odd tourist, who like us were snapping away with our cameras. The net was hauled in, the fish flipped out and sorted. Eventually some sort of order was restored and the fish, prawns etc were spread out on the market stalls.

After seeing such wonderful fresh fish, we had to have a fish supper in the evening.
