Reasons for trip

This is well situated on the busy A46, A17, A1 Roundabout and is a convenient stop before the A1. We called in here on the way home on a coach tour. It was 3.30 and 56 people descending on the place did rather stretch cafe staff to their limits. The selection of cakes was uninspiring – a small slice of Victoria sponge, a sort of flapjack, rather sad looking Bakewell tart, small pieces of shortbread and a few muffins. None appealed but the slice of Lincolnshire plum bread was excellent.

There was a counter with a selection of meat pies and pork pies but no sign of any staff serving. Nor was there any fresh meat for sale, although boards on the walls proclaim Lincolnshire Red beef etc. There was an empty chiller display opposite the pies which hadn’t been cleaned after emptying. The fruit and veg was similar to what you will find at your local supermarket and was all labelled ‘English’ apart from the mushrooms which were labelled Irish. I didn’t get the impression they were locally produced and did feel the ‘Farm Shop’ label was a bit of a con, although there was local Lincolnshire poacher cheese on sale as well as flour produced in Lincolnshire. The bread was mass produced with a sell by date of up to 3 days.

There jams, preserves and alcohol on sale as well as cards and some gifts.

Toilets however let them down badly. Not only are these beginning to show their age but by 3.30 they felt very well used and there aren’t enough to cope with a lot of people.
