Reasons for trip

If you want to wander around Liverpool and take in some history of The Beatles, just head for Mathew Street and the Cavern Walks. “The Beatles Story”:https://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review?id=176294 is a very interesting pair of exhibits, but you can also experience the Fab Four without spending money.

You can do what we did and start at the NE corner of N John Street and Harrington Street and take a walk by the Hard Days Night Hotel in the old Central Buildings to see the statues of The Beatles on the exterior corners and walls of the building. Wander down to Mathews Street (on your right as you walk north past the hotel) to see the rebuilt Cavern where they used to play. The street is pedestrianized so you do not have to worry about vehicles as you look up and around. Go down all the steps into The Cavern Club and see the stage, hear other groups perform. You can get the sense of what it would have been like in the 60s with everyone packed in; what it would have smelled like – reputedly of alcohol, sweat and disinfectant. We went in the afternoon so it wasn’t totally packed (we could move around, just) and it was free to enter. It is actually quite large as there are a number of rooms. Take in the memorabilia on the walls. If you’re so inclined, you can stay a while and have a drink and sing along. There are other statues along Mathews Street of The Beatles including the one over The Beatles Shop. You will not be short of all possible souvenirs to buy.

Turn left at the top of Mathew Street onto Stanley Street to see the Tommy Steele sculpture of Eleanor Rigby sat on a bench talking to a little bird.

And don’t forget the larger than life statues of The Beatles at Albert Dock in front of the Pier Head. Take your picture like my aunt and I – you’ll see how large the statues are. Really, we’re not that short!

We were lucky to be with family who know Liverpool. If you are new to the city, there are lots of options of tours related to The Beatles. There is also a “free 2-hour guided walk”:https://www.getyourguide.com/liverpool-l210/liverpool-free-walking-tour-t37015/?cmp=ga&partner_id=CD951&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8JG01omE1gIVAShpCh3pew-ZEAAYAyAAEgKbVvD_BwE I found which I might take the next time I’m there just to see if there’s something new I can see. The choice is yours.
