Reasons for trip

A visit to Fortune’s Kippers is always top of the list on any trip to Whitby. The smokehouse has been smoking kippers for 150 years and my father remembered visits to it on holidays to Whitby when he was a boy. You’ve not lived if you’ve not eaten a Fortune’s kipper. They are completely different to the mass produced dyed offerings in the supermarket.

The smokehouse is nestled under the cliffs below the abbey and kippers are still produced in the original smokehouse with its tarry walls. The tiny shop possibly hasn’t changed much either with its green tiled walls. Kippers are sold in different sizes and are wrapped in greaseproof paper and then several sheets of newspaper.

There is always a steady flow of people to the shop with its lovely aroma of smoked kippers. The shop is open 9-3 on Mondays to Saturdays and 10-2 on Sundays, but you are warned they will close early if they run out of kippers. At 12 o’clock on a cold and wet Saturday at the beginning of February, they only had small or large kippers left. The extra large would feed a family… The shop also sells kipper pate and smoked bacon.

I came home with two large kippers, which I always cook in the microwave. They are juicy, very tasty and filling – a good way to start the day.
