Reasons for trip

This is in the middle of the Yorkshire Wolds, that area of rolling and isolated farmland to the south of the A64 and North York Moors. It is well off the tourist map and an area people drive through on their way to somewhere else.

Over the years we have driven along the B1248 which cuts through the heart of the Wolds. The “picnic site”:https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/198903 at Fimber is set among the trees and opposite the “Yorkshire Wolds Railway,”:https://www.yorkshirewoldsrailway.org.uk/ just south of the crossroads with the B1251. With very clean toilets, it is a useful place to stop.

It also has a small cafe. The car park is usually busy with bikers (and is obviously a popular spot with them). A gleam came into Number Two Grandson’s eye when he saw them with a selection of cakes from the cafe and he announced “I’m hungry”.

Cafe is a bit of a misnomer as it is a serving counter with tables scattered around BUT it had the most amazing selection of food. There were pasties, sausage slice and sausage rolls. There was every imaginable choice of tray bakes as well as scones, bakewell tarts, fruit cake, custard tarts, blackberry and apple pie… Being in Yorkshire there was also Yorkshire curd pie too!

Cakes were served on a paper serviette to save washing up, although tea and coffee were served in big pot mugs.

Five cakes and a can of fizz cost us the princely sum of £7.50! No wonder it is so popular with the bikers – they know a good thing.

The nearest post code is YO25 3HG and the grid reference is SE910608. The picnic site is to the east of Fimber village, – a few houses around a duck pond. Although the postal address is Driffield, that is nearly ten miles away. The B1248 turns north off the A166 (Driffield to York Road) just west of Wetwang.
