Reasons for trip

I have written a separate review for the Ffestiniog railway.

This review just looks at accessibility on the railway.

There is some disabled parking at PORTHMADOG station. Alternatively, passengers can be dropped off at the station if using the council pay and display car park. There is level access to the booking office, shop, cafe and platform. There is a disabled toilet on the platform.

Normal train services have at least one coach with extra wide doors suitable for a wheelchair user and with space for a wheelchair. Access is by a portable ramp. This is suitable for small battery operated chairs, but not for motorised scooters. Wheelchair user are recommended to contact the booking office before travelling to discuss their needs and make a reservation, as space is limited. Guards are friendly and used to helping people in wheelchairs or with mobility problems. All trains have a buffet car and buffet stewards take orders and deliver food and drinks to your seat. Although there is a toilet on train services, this is not suitable for wheelchair users.

MINFFORD Station has a small car park and ramped access to the platform for Blaenau Ffestiniog trains. Access to the Porthmadog bound platform is across the track on a wooden crossing. There are no facilities on the station.

TAN-Y-BWLCH has car parking by the station and flat crossing with a gate through the fence to the platform, as long as the train has not arrived. It has a disabled toilet and ramp into the cafe.

BLAENAU FFESTINIOG does not have a car park, but disabled passengers can be dropped off at the station before using council car parks. Access to the platform is by a gentle ramp and level crossing over the tracks. There is ramped access to the shop and booking office and a disabled toilet.

The Vintage trains unfortunately do not have wheelchair access, although guards have a small step helping passengers with mobility problems climb into the coaches. Folding wheelchairs can be carried in the guard’s van.

Wheelchairs can be borrowed from Porthmadog or Blaenau Ffestiniog stations.

Disabled passengers travel at the concessionary rate. Dogs are allowed on the trains for a small charge.

Information is available on request in large print or braille.
