If I’m given the option of choosing a play to see it usually won’t be a musical; a comedy or a Shakespeare or a mystery, perhaps, but not a musical. My sister however really likes musicals and sometimes she picks the play. That is how we ended up seeing “Billy Elliot the Musical”:https://www.stratfordfestival.ca/WhatsOn/PlaysAndEvents/Production/Billy-Elliot at the Stratford Festival last month. It brought back many memories of the coal miners’ strikes, the hard life they lived and their livelihood that was at stake.
If you get the chance to see it I highly recommend it. Directed and choreographed by Donna Feore, the show is a tour de force. The young actor playing the key role, eleven year old Billy Elliot, is excellent! He got a well-deserved standing ovation. With a score by Sir Elton John, what’s not to like? At times it will make you laugh and it will also touch your tear ducts.
The play is on until November 10, 2019.
