Reasons for trip

Winding my way behind Perth concert hall and Perth theatre, I had to ask where to find the RSGS headquarters and Fair Maid’s House. Only open certain afternoons (check before travelling), during my visit there was one member of staff and a volunteer on duty.

The lower floor, where I was free to roam, is home to geographical displays and relevant, changing artworks. After considerable time on this lower floor, it was time to be guided (or escorted) to the upper floor where the RSGS have amassed an amazing collection of maps (don’t touch) and books. A great resource for modern day explorers and researchers, I found it very interesting just to look.

Then through to the Glovers’ hall- now restored, this room was what I wanted to see. Surrounded by books and a mix of exhibits, I just wanted to make myself comfortable in one of the seats and take in the atmosphere. The Glovers were an ancient guild and still occasionally meet in this room. I was told there are small weddings held here too.

Check out the medieval wall beside the staircase.

The Fair Maid of Perth (Perth is the ‘Fair City’) was written by Sir Walter Scott so perhaps I need to now read the book?

Entry is free but a donation is welcome. There is no dedicated parking but Perth has many car parks. Food & refreshments are available nearby.
