We visited Exbury in warming sunshine to tour their renowned azalea and rhododendron gardens and we were gloriously rewarded. The colours were stunning and each themed section was well maintained from water features and seating to of course trees, flowers and shrubs. The well signed paths took us round the 200 acre site through the daffodil meadow, the winter gardens and the camellia walk – plenty then to see outside of the azalea season.
The fairly pricey admission costs included a free autumn entrance ticket which we'll definitely be taking up. Tantalising glimpses of Beaulieu River through the trees, an art exhibition, spotting a Rothschild, a ride on the 12 1/4" gauge steam railway, plant purchasing opportunities and welcome refreshments at both tearoom and restaurant completed our day.
A buggy tour is available at extra charge although the majority of the layout is fairly flat so accessible to wheelchairs. Dogs are welcomed if kept on a lead with water supplied at strategic points – they are of course requested to leave nothing behind but their pawprints!
All together a most enjoyable day.
