Although “Ellingham House”:https://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/whitby/whitby-cottages/ellingham-house?fbclid=IwAR0Ji2HI6FWDzLRter9yhZAkaURWOyFM6A422gw8NnwHE4suscyVpGgHL4I in Whitby sleeps eight, four of us stayed there for a weekend in October.
The house was spotlessly clean on arrival and in particular, the kitchen was extremely well-equipped with dishwasher, cooker, microwave, large fridge/freezer, washing machine/tumble drier and plenty of crockery, glassware and cutlery. Although we just had breakfast and ate out on two nights and had a takeaway on the third, it would be easy to self-cater as the kitchen-diner is large and the table seats eight very comfortably.
The lounge was comfortable with a two-seater and two three-seater sofas with a large wall-mounted TV – not that we used it. A helpful brochure provided information on things to do both in Whitby and the surrounding area. Wi-Fi was included.
We used the two double bedrooms on the first floor which had two separate bathrooms: we used the one with the walk-in shower, but the other had shower over the bath and a separate loo (there is no downstairs loo). Our bed was extremely comfortable and the bedding and towels which were all provided and included were good quality. Our room had a wardrobe with plenty of ‘proper’ hangers and also a dressing table with mirror. A hairdryer was provided which was helpful.
On the floor above were two more double bedrooms with a third bathroom.
There was a small courtyard at the back with patio furniture, and as it was an unseasonably warm October weekend, we sat out at the end of our day with drinks.
The house has an absolutely brilliant location and was only a short walk from both the sea front and the town and the street has views of the iconic Whitby Abbey standing high on the cliff top. As we arrived by train, we walked to the house, although the 10-minute walk was up a steep hill – having last visited Whitby over 40 years ago, I’d forgotten how hilly it was. For those arriving by car, there is no private parking, but there is off-street parking using permits.
There are plenty of shops nearby including “Botham’s of Whitby”:https://www.botham.co.uk/ bakers with its delicious array of sandwiches and cakes and “Silver Street Fisheries”:https://www.facebook.com/Silver-Street-Fisheries-192810547428129/ – what more could you ask for!
I’ve only included a couple of photos as those on the agent’s booking “site”:https://www.yorkshireholidaycottages.co.uk/whitby/whitby-cottages/ellingham-house?fbclid=IwAR0Ji2HI6FWDzLRter9yhZAkaURWOyFM6A422gw8NnwHE4suscyVpGgHL4I are absolutely spot on.
