There is plenty to do within easy reach, Granada an hour by car, Antequera 30 minutes, El Torcal a wonderful example of how good nature is at producing masterpieces out of bare rock, El Chorro with its man made lakes and the local village just a few minutes away.
Villanueva has everything you need, minimarkets, a daily fruit and vegetable market, a pleasant square where you can wile away the time sipping whatever drink you want and a couple of restaurants providing excellent Spanish fare at very reasonable prices.
Your hosts, Vikki and Dave, cannot do enough from the moment you arrive till being there to wave you goodbye. Sit in their lovely garden in the late afternoon after a busy day of sightseeing and let your eye wander over the countryside around the cortijo. As far as the eye can see there is greenery in the shape of olive trees, stretching to the horizon and the far off hilltops. Open another bottle of Rioja and work out what you are going to eat that evening and just sag back.
