Reasons for trip

On a theatre trip to Stratford-upon-Avon, my partner and I normally park in the Recreational Grounds car park (£2 from 4pm to 8am so perfect for an evening trip to the Swan Theatre) then walk up Sheep Street, picking a dining establishment from the many on offer.

Last night we walked up the road but, with time to spare, turned left at the top onto Chapel Street. When I spotted a ‘January Sale’ billboard I thought this was just another clothes shop, but it turned out to be Edward Moon’s idea of a sale – and what a find it turned out to be.

The brasserie normally offers a pre-theatre menu at £13.95 for two courses. The January offer took this down to £9.95 which included a glass of wine, so how could we refuse?

Once through the door, we were warmly greeted, taken to a table and equipped with menus. I chose Ovenbaked Field Mushrooms (with bacon and parmesan glaze) followed by Thai Spiced Fishcakes, while Terry had House Pate and Sirloin of Bacon. Having thoroughly enjoyed those two courses, Terry pushed the boat out with a Caramelised Zesty Lemon Tart for pud, bringing the total bill to £26.15. Now that’s a bargain!

All the food was freshly cooked, hot and tasty, and the service was friendly and attentive. The brasserie seemed to be doing a steady trade, although there was room for more diners: I imagine many get no further than Sheep Street. Our extra few steps led us to a cosy setting, excellent service and good food at a very reasonable price, which deserves to be better known.

It was the perfect start to a delightful evening (we saw the RSC’s new production of Twelfth Night, also highly recommended) – if you’re looking for a pre-theatre dinner that offers exceptional value, this is well worth a try.
