If you are in the Perthshire area, with a few hours to spare, do visit the tiny distillery at Edradour. You'll find Edradour nestling in a pocket glen in the hills above Pitlochry in the Southern Highlands. Here whisky is distilled using the old 'farm' methods. Production is very small compared with the modern distilleries, just 12 casks a week, but the golden brew produced is exceptionally smooth. I'm not a whisky drinker but even I could tell that the sample I was given was a unique, quality product.
It is worth taking the tour and hearing about the skills handed down since 1825 from one generation to the next. The shop too is interesting packed with every item you can think of connected with whisky from whisky marmalade to cream liqueurs. The coffee shop is a must. For the price of a cup of coffee you also receive an Edradour mug to take home as a souvenir of a great day out. Oh yes, don't forget to take a camera because the cluster of whitewashed buildings with red doors set amongst the Highland hills is breathtakingly beautiful.
