I have been lucky enough to attend Eastbourne’s annual free airshow many times over the last few years and as the 2017 date approaches I felt it timely that I should share the experience. The show has grown into a four day celebration of aviation with some incredible displays from favourites such as the Red Arrows, Typhoon and Battle of Britain Memorial flight. The beauty of Eastbourne is that the action takes place just offshore so a picnic on the beach is the order of the day and you can sit back and enjoy the show. For those of us who like a more comfortable perch it is possible to reserve exclusive seating at the Bandstand by booking in advance, or take the car to Beachy Head where there is a park and view car park (charge approx. £5).
As well as airborne displays you will find a carnival atmosphere along the seafront on the Western Lawns, with representation from The Royal Air Force, British Army, Royal Marines & Royal Navy. Flight simulators, zip wires and a climbing wall all attract thrill seekers and numerous food & drink outlets keep everyone going.
My main tip for this amazing show is travel to Eastbourne by public transport if possible. Traffic and parking can be tricky although there are areas of park and ride that work well.
Secondly, as a Granny I found my young grand daughter didn’t appreciate the noise, especially the Typhoon! Many younger children have ear protectors and I recommend bringing them along if you have little ones in tow.
This year the dates are 17-20 August 2017 and all details can be found at http://www.eastbourneairshow.com/
