Dominica is very different to most Caribbean Islands as it eschews large multinational all inclusive resorts in favour of smaller, boutique, eco friendly, family run hotels. There is a well signposted 184km long distance walking route, split into 14 segments, the best of which make ideal day hikes for the more adventurous. The snorkelling & diving is amongst the best we’ve encountered and so easy at Toucari Bay, where you park up at the pier, simply wade in off the beach & within 10 seconds you’re surrounded by shoals of brightly coloured fish. There’s no current & it’s like a millpond being a sheltered bay on the West side of the island. For a drier experience there are whale trips from the capital town, Roseau, where you are virtually guaranteed to see massive Sperm Whales, which reside there throughout the bay. You can check out the other numerous trips online. One word of caution, if you’re flying in from the UK, you’ll probably need to catch a connecting flight from Antigua. Please don’t rely on LIAT, the regional carrier to get you into Dominica, the same day. They are notorious for cancelling flights without warning. Give yourself a couple of days in Antigua, both on the outward leg & return. We’re very glad we did.
