We overnighted in the pretty town of Moffat, 50 miles south of Edinburgh, before a stay at Auchen Castle for a wedding. The Black Bull Inn makes great play about being an ‘ancient Scottish hostelry’ with a Robert Burns connection and we looked forward to our stay in a Classic King room – two grades above the standard room, which the website clearly states would be on the first floor with ‘a picturesque view across to the church’. So we were surprised to be lead to a separate building next door the Inn, and to a characterless ground floor room that not only opened straight onto the street but had a figured glass window so we had no view at all but could see every person walking past. We felt like goldfish in a bowl. The Inn’s name was painted in large letters on the outside wall above the door to the room, resulting in arriving guests mistaking our room for Reception. One lady banged on our door until we opened it and explained that we were not Reception and, more worryingly, a man barged straight into our room as we were relaxing on the bed. When I explained what had happened to the Black Bull staff, I was reminded that we had been told to make sure the door was closed properly. How about them making sure the lock worked properly? My suggestion that a notice was put on the room’s door to direct people the right way to Reception was dismissed out of hand, as was our request for an alternative room. As a finishing touch, the windowless bathroom had the drain set in the middle of the room instead of under the shower, leaving the floor wet after the shower was used. The room should have been priced as a standard double, and should have been where the website said it would be – on the first floor, with a nice view of the church. Fortunately, our stay at Auchen Castle was outstanding.
