We’d spent most of our day visiting Stirling Castle, and just wanted to stop off at a distillery on our way home. Doune was not too far off our route, and we were very happy to find delicious whisky at this distillery.
We’d visited various distilleries in the past, but had to admit we hadn’t heard of Deanston whisky, which boasts its unique unchill-filtered method. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time for a tour of the distillery or an organised tasting session, but very pleased to find, in the distillery shop, that the young ladies serving there were more than happy to let us taste the various whiskies before buying. They even gave a short description of each, how it is made and the flavours to look for. All of that was free – it would have been relatively expensive to go on a tour and have a more formal tasting, but we didn’t need that at all. We must have tasted 5 different styles, including some expensive ones, before we bought a bottle to take home. My favourite, some of which still remains in my decanter, is the one called Virgin Oak, but I have to say I could have happily bought all of them!
