Basically, a pub with a few rooms, this was a last-minute booking so was a reasonable price at £68 for a small double room as single occupancy, including breakfast. It was pleasant enough, good bathroom facilities, but the room was at the back of the building right next to the cellar cooler (10 foot away at the most) so VERY noisy all night. Still experiencing our heatwave so a portable fan was provided.

The bar and dining room downstairs is pleasant, big basket-woven chairs plus seating outside on the verandah, though lots of mosquitos and other flying insects to dodge as the light faded. It is easy enough to find walking up into town from the train station, just following the road around into St Mary’s Street. Cromwell’s is on the right a little way down, so ideal location for shopping or sightseeing.

It was late when I arrived, and just after 10pm they were getting ready to close the bar (kitchen already closed) and I could have gone out if I wanted as there was an outside key for residents. So after a very uncomfortable, sleepless night, the breakfast was welcome – cereals and juice plus a range of breakfast dishes cooked to order. It is a pity about the room as number 6 should not be rented out to guests unless they are told about the cooler next to the window, but I do not know about other rooms they have. I could not get their WiFi to work either, so not my preferred place to stay in Shrewsbury.
