Culture/Sightseeing

We go to events at Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire from time to time. In April, it was the “Memories of the 1940’s” event. I was dressed in costume of the era and also took some photos.

There was plenty of entertainment from singers, “policemen”, spivs, Sergeant Major Marmite, “Winston Churchill”, “Charlie Chaplin” and other re-enactors. (There were no obvious weapon displays this year)

A variety of trams were running up and down the tracks, with stops along the way. Halfway up the track you can alight to explore the Woodland Walk and Sculpture Trail. This area has been made suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. From here there are amazing views across the Derwent Valley. There are interpretive displays describing Derbyshire mining. The day we visted there were two women dressed as pit brow lasses, whose job it was to pick stones from the coal after it was hauled to the surface.

Many of the buildings in the village have been rescued from other towns and cities such as the Red lion Pub, which was re-built brick by brick. Other refreshments can be obtained from Rita’s Tea Rooms and Barnett’s old-fashioned sweet shop.

There are various exhibitions including those to do with horse-drawn trams, steam trams and electric trams. There are archives about pioneering inventors, and the early postal service. Don’t forget to visit the George Stephenson Discovery Centre with the digital interactive exhibits.

We had a great day out back in Apiril, enjoying the entertainment and meeting up with some old friends. I can recommend Crich Tramway Village.
