If you fancy a quick(ish) lunch in St Ives this summer there is an alternative to the ubiquitous fish and chip shops – as good as they are!
We came across Cornish Catch on the pier during a recent visit and were so glad that we stopped to try out the menu. The business is basically two guys in a rather small van perched at the end of the pier and at first glance they could pass as the traditional fast food outlet that is all to common in seaside resorts. But don’t be fooled. The location gives them direct access to fresh seafood straight from the sea and that is central to how the business is driven (no van pun intended). It is however only part of the story. We could not believe the care and attention that was given to the preparation of our food. The use of herbs and seasoning laced with a white wine sauce only served to exaggerate the taste of the very fresh seafood and we both left thinking that we have paid big money in restaurants for seafood that was nowhere near as delicious as that served up by Cornish Catch.
We both opted for the seafood paella and can say without any hesitation that this was the finest meal out of a box that we have ever eaten.
The van comes with a five star hygiene certificate which many will find reassuring and the only area I feel needs some work is the drinks offer which is a bit limited and comes across as division two when compared to the premiership rating of the food. The menu has a range of seafood options and prices. We paid £8 each for our lunch and would do so again in an instant – if we didn’t live 400 miles from the resort.
Give it a go if you enjoy very fresh food prepared by people who clearly care about what they are doing and are enjoying life to the full as their business develops around them.
