Situated in many acres of beautiful countryside, the owners of Combermere Abbey have converted the 19th century stables around a courtyard into nine luxurious cottages, each individually designed, housing 4 – 10 guests. We stayed in Cotton cottage which had fabulous Indian décor with authentic furnishings and a well equipped modern kitchen. A generous sized breakfast hamper full of delicious food and drink was left for us, but locally sourced food and wine can be purchased from their pantry shop. Sleeping four people, we found it spacious and warm, although too early in the season for a log fire! The lounge was very comfortable and there were lovely views over the parkland from the front garden.
Setting out to explore our surroundings we found the tennis court near the fabulous walled garden, and the unique fruit tree maze. A large glass house and pavilion are located in the garden where weddings are held. There are woodland walks – bicycles can be borrowed – and a large mere, making it a haven for birdlife, flora and fauna. The Abbey itself is a private family home.
This is an historic part of Shropshire with many interesting towns nearby and a choice of good restaurants and friendly pubs to visit, but if you wish to have a relaxing, peaceful break there is so much on offer here and we look forward to returning in the near future.
