I was recommended this by a neighbour. I’d got to go into Scunthorpe so decided to treat myself to a cake.
The coffee lounge is just off the High Street, next to the Nat West Bank. It is fairly small unit with a few chairs outside and more seating upstairs. At 11am on a Friday morning, it was busy. This seems to be the place silver travellers meet up for morning coffee and a cake.
The cake selection was impressive. There is always chocolate cake, coffee and walnut and Victoria sponge as well as scones. The rest vary from week to week, and there are pictures of the weekly choice on “Facebook”:https://www.facebook.com/columbiacoffeelounge .
This week there was white chocolate aero cake, caramac cake or cherry bakewell. Add in a selection of tray bakes like millionaires shortbread, rocky road, malteser bars and mince pies, and you are spoilt for choice.
It was a difficult decision. The chocolate cake was labeled ‘very chocolate cake’ and did look dark and cocoa-y but I couldn’t resist the white chocolate aero cake, with its layer of dark chocolate sponge between two layers of sponge. These were sandwiched together with butter cream and the whole was covered with white icing with chocolate icing decoration and covered with white and milk chocolate aero balls. It tasted even better than it looked. I dread to think what the calorie intake was….At £3 it was slightly more expensive than I have paid elsewhere in Scunthorpe but it was worth it!
The coffee lounge menu has a range of breakfasts from different breakfast baps from £2 to the all day breakfast at £3.50. This looks excellent value with sausages, bacon, beans, mushroom, scrambled egg and toast.
Lunches include a range of soups and a baguette for £3.20. There are jacket potatoes from £3.20 or salads from £4.30. Include paninis from £3.80, wraps from £4 and sandwiches (white or brown bread) with a wide range of different fillings from £4.20.
The coffee lounge is a long, narrow room with blackboards with menus covering one of the walls. There isn’t a lot of space so tables may be a bit close for anyone wanting an intimate conversation. Although there is level access, there is not a lot of room for a wheelchair to manoeuvre.
Orders are placed at a small counter displaying all the cakes. Staff are pleasant and service was quick. The coffee lounge has a loyalty card – buy five drinks and get your sixth drink free. It is a pity there isn’t one for cakes.
