It was once a chalk quarry, but now College Lake is a premier nature reserve. The family friendly site is equally accessible to older visitors. About two miles from Tring town centre I think you will need a car as I am unsure about any local bus route.
Entry is free, but donations are requested for parking and entrance. The stunning new eco friendly Visitor Centre has a friendly reception with knowledgeable staff, contains a small gift shop, super toilets and a cafe. Prices are reasonable and service is good. Cafe opens at 12 noon.
I had telephoned in advance to borrow a Tramper all terrain mobility scooter, and after completing some simple paper work and receiving essential training, I was off. Ahead of me was the Wild Trail – a 2 mile circuit of the lake, travelling through wonderful scenery.
The paths are generally well maintained, but there were a few muddy spots after much rain. There are few gradients, and lots of places to sit and admire the views. Many bird hides are provided at regular intervals, with seats and shade.
You will need 3 hours at least to get round the lake and enjoy a cup of tea, but why not stay longer?
It is a quiet and peaceful spot, whether your interest is wild birds or natural scenery. You will want to come again I am sure. I do!
