Devon is full of great houses. My favourite is Coleton Fishacre, a National Trust property, near Kingswear. Built as a country home for the D’Oyle Carte family, it’s unusual in that it combines stunning architecture and internal design with a genuine feeling of a home; you can actually believe people lived here. The gardens are beautiful with sea views.
In common with all great houses, it is split into upstairs and downstairs, but the servants’ quarters are more comfortable than most.
There is a beautiful lounge with a stage and spectacular entrance that was used for performances.
The paths are uneven, but there are accessibility arrangements, including parking spaces.
The usual National Trust shop and cafe. As someone with dietary requirements, I was impressed with the gluten free offer with sandwiches freshly made.
