Escape the British winter with this wonderful break to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The holiday is with Thomson, flying on one of their larger aircraft. We upgraded to their premium service which ensures a fast check in and extra legroom and refreshments. The only drawback of the holiday was the time spent at Cancun airport where the passport control had one person processing… I think we were unlucky to arrive at a changeover time! The transfer to the hotel was less than an hour. The room was spotless and an "animal" shaped towel was left on the bed each day! There were 4 optics in the room and an ever full fridge of mixer drinks, water, beer etc. The landscaped grounds were spacious with a multitude of colourful birds and the intriguing raccoon type creatures called Coati foraging around in the morning and late afternoon.
There was easy access to the white sandy beach either by walking through a sister hotel or waiting for the landtrain for the less able. The food was second to none with a huge selection at each meal with extras throughout the day if needed. There were interesting food carvings and sometimes ice carvings took centre stage. The wine flowed freely too! You could also book for a speciality restaurant but this was on an early morning booking system for the same day. Lunch could be taken at one of the 2 beach located sister hotels to save going back to the Tequila. There was a very entheusiastic animation team who oversaw all manner of activities from early morning mediatation to dance lessons and water sports. They put a different show on in the theatre every evening and were very professional. However they were not intrusive and if you just wanted to relax, as we did, you were left alone. All the staff in the hotel were very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. The Thomson trips were very plentiful and expensive so we used a local agent for half the price. However do not go to a hotel that is offered instead of payment as it is a timeshare type of arrangement. The trips to Tulum and Coba were well worth it, especially as you have a local Mayan guide. Needless to say we have booked again for next January!
