Walking

Clowance Estate & Country Club, located near a little village of Praze-an-Beeble, Camborne, Cornwall is tucked away in a wooded area and alongside a golf course. Although we were not there for the golf but rather a period of relaxation, we did on a couple of occasions take a walk up to the course to see the players carrying on their trade. Our cabin was very well appointed with a good sized double bedroom en-suite for my huband and I, a single room for my mother and an attic bedroom for our teenage niece. The staff had been most accommodating in providing a ramp to get my mother up and down in her wheelchair. We used the cabin as our base and most days left shortly after breakfast for a day trip to see the different sights in the area such as the Lizard, Lands End, Boscastle, various gardens and the Gardening Museum (my mother's passion), and drives along the beautiful coastline, even when the weather was not that good. For supplies we tended to make a list, and on our way back in the evenings, would pop into one of the easily accessible supermarkets to buy in what was needed. We would usually eat out for lunch at establishments off the beaten track (often attached to the homes of our hosts) and return for dinner to the cabin or (and here's the beauty) have dinner at the very good restaurant in the main complex of Clowans!

Our niece was a fan of the indoor swimming pool and made good use of it. She and I also had a challenge match on the tennis court, much to the amusement of the staff and other guests. Although there was a TV we hardly watched that, rather spending time going over the day's visit highlights and photographs that had been taken. The cabin was set aside from others so that the peace and quiet required was in abundance, but there was also a lake which was frequented by various waterfowl and a good number of other species of birds. The grounds provided many walks and gardens to wander about in should we so wish and we did go down to the lake quiet often to birdwatch.

We all got different things from this holiday: My husband and I, who were both working full-time and had my mother living with us, a much needed opportunity to recharge our rather depleted batteries, my mother who had such a sense of wonder about the beauty of the rugged coastline and the beauty of the Cornish gardens, especially the roses, and my niece who had a healthy experience of swimming whenever she wanted to do so and kindly helping around the domestic scene.

I can highly recommend this lovely Estate, the beautiful accommodation and the helpful, friendly staff. The whole experience was a pleasure from booking in to saying goodbye. Just wish we could go back there sometime soon to explore the parts of Cornwall we did not have the time to see.

P.S. This holiday took place in 2007.
