Ciutadella was originally the Capital of Menorca until that title was taken over by Mahon. In contrast to the large bustling town of Mahon, Ciutadella is small and compact with the old town a maze of narrow streets with small cafes, shops, art galleries, a cathedral and even a small harbour. If you like architecture and history this is the place to go.
Strolling around the old town is fascinating with plenty of places to visit and it is easy walking with no steep hills or steps. The narrow streets and tall buildings give plenty of protection from the midday sun and make shopping more comfortable and there are loads of places to eat. There are also many squares with seating areas and trees surrounding the ‘old town’ if you like to watch the world go by with a nice cup of coffee or even a wine.
We visited initially on an ‘Island Tour’ which provided a guide, who was a mine of information, both from an historical point of view and also regarding the archaeology within the town and the island. The tour takes you to many more places around the island- but that is a whole other story.
We also visited Ciutadella on our own, later in the week and looked around at a more leisurely pace and bought presents to take home with us as well as some treats for ourselves. We sat in one of the squares to have our lunch and it was one of the nicest days of our holiday. Very relaxing and peaceful.
If you go to a Menorca then you really must visit the beautiful town of Ciutadella.
