The city walls are deservedly the main attraction of the Old City. They still surround the City completely. The walk covers nearly one and a quarter miles and includes several flights of steps.
The views from the walk are spectacular. As one picture is worth a thousand words, please do study the photographs in this review as my photographs beat my prose.
As a walk around the walls is a “must do” for every visitor you should consider carefully the time of your walk carefully. In the tourist season, May to October, avoid all weekend visits to the Old City. Some friends of ours ignored this advice and got stuck getting out of the city due to a gridlock of pedestrians trying to get in the narrow main gate; local police had to be called to clear the jam. It was later revealed that three cruise ships were docked in the harbour and had loosed around 13,500 passengers who all wished to enter the Old City.
We chose a weekday and arrived at 5 pm to walk the walls. There was no trouble at all with crowds nor the heat of the midday sun so we enjoyed our walk to the full. You should follow our lead or perhaps take the walk as soon as it is open in the morning. Either way, you will enjoy a superb experience.
