Reasons for trip

Although I enjoy dance and gymnastics (used to do a lot in the olden days!) I always fancied this hi-tech version and the Royal Albert Hall curved auditorium seems a perfect location. I booked online in advance so feel £49.95 for a ticket was a good price – a seat in the Circle not too far round the side of the performance area.

Just the stage set is pretty impressive so definitely an air of excitement in the waiting audience. Bear in mind it is a long trek from South Kensington underground to the Hall so allow plenty of time if coming via this route. Not sure what the protocol is for photos, but there was no problem to get the stage set before it started.

I was on my own, so walked around to left of the box office to find several bars – staff in the quieter Aspinall bar were very good. Lots of children in their best clothes for a trip to the theatre, but others less formal. It is a great stage set with lighting making the most of the curves of the Hall. Brilliant musicians on stage as a perfect accompaniment to the action.

Even if the notion of “circus” performers is not your preferred choice, this takes it all to a new level. Basically, they are gymnasts with performances worthy of the Olympics! Girls on the high bars, young men with very athletic use of a see-saw, the main character Alumina performing inside a small curved tank of water and her suitor presenting a breath-taking pole dance routine.

There is an odd little back story, a chunky old lady and an old sailor courting each other, dashing around the stage and auditorium laughing and teasing each other in a nonsense language. As I said, very odd but very funny. This was an excellent performance in a stunning setting.
