Said to be the most haunted castle in Britain Chillingham, in Northumberland, is sure to provide entertainment for the whole family. It’s blood line dates back to the 13th. century when it was build to defend England from the marauding Scots.
A tour will take you into the dungeons and torture chambers as well as the kitchen, state rooms and private living quarters. Even though still lived in some rooms are without electricity so dinner parties are torch lit.
Wander round the gardens, relandscaped by Capability Brown in the 18th. century. And don’t miss the tea room with home made produce and a roaring log fire. And if you are up for it, visit the Chillingham Wild Cattle which graze the parkland.
There are concessions for seniors but those with limited mobility will find the tour difficult as there are uneven floors and steep spiral staircases.
Chillingham offers accommodation, if you are brave enough, and evening ghost tours.
Enjoy.
