The Midsummer Watch Parade in Chester is one of the oldest and most colourful parades in Britain. It takes place on the Saturday and Sunday of the Summer Solstice in June. It starts at the Town Hall Square and meanders through the city centre.
The Parade consists of of mythical beasts, bands, Celtic Lords, Green Men, Hobby Horses, Angels, Dragons, a Pirate Ship, a family of Giants and much more. The ancient parade was disbanded in the 1670’s before being revived again in 1989, after a lot of research took place. Local people are involved in this tradition and it’s a great way to celebrate 500 years of the city’s history. Schoolchildren were dressed up as fiery monsters, geese, angels, ravens and fish.
What we loved, apart from the spectacle itself, was the friendly and lively atmosphere. The crowds were not too overwhelming, so we were able to see it all. A great day out!
