Reasons for trip

The last time I ate in “Champagne Charlies”:http://www.davy.co.uk/wine-bar/champagne-charlies/#food-wine was for a “Christmas lunch”:http://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review/restaurant/148641-review-champagne-charlies when I was still a working girl. Now retired, I was more than happy to say yes to a friend’s lunch invitation. We were there to celebrate the 145th birthday of the Davy’s Wine Bar Chain with a special lunch – two courses for £14.50 and three for £18.50 – not bad value but when there was a wine with each course, it was even better.

We had lots of catching up to do and an aperitif of prosecco was ideal for our gossip. There was no choice on the menu and we started with potted shrimps on sour dough which were generous in portion size and spicy in taste. They were served with a glass of white burgundy.

Next up was simple and British – bangers and mash in a champagne gravy. Once again, they were excellent, especially the decadent crisp, fried onion ring that topped the sausages. Whilst I’m not a great red wine drinker, the glass of Malbec went down a treat.

Pudding was something I’d never chose off a menu – treacle tart and custard. Fortunately the slice was relatively slim, it wasn’t too sweet or sickly and the custard was light. The glass of Madeira was perfect.

By the end of our meal we were both pretty stuffed but decided to retreat to the bar and share a bottle of the white burgundy which was on special offer for the day (£18.95 instead of £26.95).

We left at 4pm, full to the brim and just in time to avoid rush hour on the tube.

They have great wine tasting events and a voucher would make an ideal present.
