Relaxation

We have just returned from a lovely 11 days half board at the Oro Negro Hotel, in Tenerife. We had been a little worried about holidays in this area, after we had been advised against our first choice hotel, as we were told it was more appropriate for young people going clubbing, as there were comings and goings all times of the night! We needn’t have worried at all. We had a very comfortable room (838) on the 8th floor of the main building, overlooking the pool and the sea (though the sea was a 10 min walk away). As an older couple we were often coming in when the young ones were going out, but there was never any noise. When we checked in, we were offered the free air conditioning. To get this we had to pay 20 euros deposit for the remote control, however there was also a ceiling fan in the room, so we were never too hot. Within the wardrobe was the safety deposit box, this was 18 euros per week plus a 10 euros deposit. There was also the option for hire of a fridge. Hairdryers are fitted in all bathrooms. There was a flat screen tv, with a couple of English channels, not that it is something I particularly want when on holiday, but useful for a daily news fix from back home. There was maid service daily. As we didn’t arrive until 10pm and we’d missed evening dinner, we were told on check in to choose a suitable day, and we could have lunch in lieu of the meal we’d missed. Breakfast was available between 7 and 10 am, Lunch 12.30 to 3pm and Dinner 6.30 to 10pm. Our package didn’t include lunch, though we could have paid 15 euros a day for this if we’d have wanted. All meals were buffet style, with show cooking areas too. At evening dinner there were soups, salads, a variety of hot meats, potatoes and vegetables to take from the buffet, then there was the griddle area where you could choose a piece of meat, fish, burger or sausage to be cooked in front of you, there was always a joint of meat available at the carving station, you could choose an omelette to be made with various fillings, always a pizza available, and finally pasta and spaghetti available to be cooked to order. Desserts were a choice of cakes, icecream, fruit, fruit salads, rice pudding and cheese and crackers. Spoilt for choice I would say! To say we were here in August, we were surprised the hotel didn’t seem crowded. Simone in the restaurant explained July and August tended to be quieter months, and things got busier from September. However this did help round the pool, as there was never any problem getting a sun lounger! The pool and surrounding areas were cleaned every morning. The animation team had an activities board visible in reception, there was aquarobics daily in a morning, and other games such as darts and boules played through the day. There was a full entertainments programme every evening in the downstairs Daniel’s Bar, which was open from 10am to 1am. Daniel’s Bar also serves snacks during the day. I would definitely return to the Oro Negro. It is a very comfortable clean hotel, with courteous helpful staff and all the facilities you need, it is in a reasonable location, just a 10 min stroll from the promenade. This promenade is around 5.5 miles long going round to Los Cristianos one way, and Costa Adeje the other. Within walking distance from the hotel are several shopping areas, and too many bars and restaurants to list! However the bars on the sea front are perfect to sit outside of on an evening, to watch the sun set over the neighbouring island of La Gomera.
