Reasons for trip

Fish and chips takes a lot of beating as long as it is freshly cooked, not greasy and decent portions. Carvers ticks on all counts. It has also been serving fish and chips since 1927, and has a good reputation locally.

This is a long established chippie with a small restaurant attached to the take away. This is rather an old fashioned room with dark furniture with a view of the high street. It was mid day on a Saturday and Ashby was fairly quiet. We were quickly shown to a table and given a copy of the menu each. As well as the traditional fish and chips, battered sausage, spam fritter and meat pie , they also do jacket potatoes as well as lasagne and chilli con carne. They also have a wine list.

Orders were soon placed. Food is freshly cooked to order, so there can be a wait, but it is worth it.

Daughter and I chose a small haddock with chips and mushy peas, which filled the plate. Grandson demolished one of the largest battered sausages I’ve seen but couldn’t manage all his chips. Son in law stuck to his usual choice of a spam fritter with chips and beans. Number two ate off the children’s menu and was also struggling to finish. The lunchtime special meal also includes bread and butter and a cup of tea. We passed on the bread and butter – probably as well as I don’t think we’d have managed it. As it was I didn’t want any tea.

The batter was light an very crispy and not at all greasy. The bowl of scraps we’d ordered were good and crispy too. The chips were chunky, very hot and nicely fluffy inside. Tomato sauce arrived in small individual dished so the grandsons had great fun dunking their chips. Someone at a neighbouring table had ordered the meat pie which did look tasty and looked like a portion from a large home made pie.

It was a good meal and the lunch time special prices are not much more than you would pay for a take away. They also do home delivery too.

There is a public car park close by or on street parking.
